If you are not familiar with nanowrimo, here are some facts you need to know about it. Nanowrimo stands for National Novel Writing Month. It was started by a non-profit some 19 years ago. Its objective is to provide people with a venue to develop their creative writing skills. Organizers thought that putting a timeframe to the activity will actually motivate participants to finish their novels. So they require participants to finish and submit their entries within the month of November. Entries are novels, of any genre, not less than 50,000 words.
The initial event only had 19 participants. Today hundreds of thousands participate each year. Many actually finish their novels, evidence that putting a timeframe to the activity is effective.
To participate in the event, you must be at least 13 years old and sign up in the nanowrimo web site. You will be asked to submit a title and excerpt of your novel. It would be a good idea to do this before November to give editors time to look at your entry and make suggestions if they think it's necessary. You are not allowed to start on your novel before November 1.
You won't be left on your own to complete your novel. Organizers provide assistance through talks and pointers from established writers. In the nanowrimo web site are tools that you can use and community of participants that can help you complete your novel. You are allowed to do your writing in the website, but it has a word count feature to help keep track of your progress. Once you have completed your novel, you can submit through the site. Organizers have a pool of editors who will look at your work and recommend changes to it.
You would be happy to know that a few of these novels submitted as entries to the nanowrimo were actually published. But even if yours fail to get the nod of a publisher, it will give you a lot of satisfaction to have written a complete novel. That's enough motivation to continue writing. You never know how far you can go unless you persevere.
